Google’s Spam Fighting Achievements In 2015

Google has released some interesting achievements and statistics from their spam fighting efforts in 2015 over on the official Google Webmaster blog. I’ve pulled out some of the information that’s useful for Ecommerce site owners.

  • There was a 180% increase of websites being hacked in 2015 compared to 2014. Considering the significant increase, it’s always worth ensuring your Ecommerce store (and blog if you have one) are fully secure. A website hack could see your rankings destroyed, website deleted or potentially have the intruders upload files and content that can harm your brand.
  • An increase in the number of sites with thin, low quality content.  One of the first things I drill into Ecommerce companies is that your product page should always have as much high quality content on them as possible. In depth product description, high-quality and custom-shot product images, product reviews etc. Most Ecommerce sites fail on this side of things.
  • Google sent more than 4.3 million messages to webmasters to notify them of manual actions that were taken on their site to help them identify the issues. If you haven’t already, it’s always worth adding your online store to Google Webmaster Tools to receive messages and alerts from Google reading manual search penalties and hacking notifications.
  • There was a 33% increase in the number of sites that went through spam clean-up efforts towards a successful reconsideration process. If you’ve lost search rankings due to spamming and other similar activities, this statistic shows it’s always worth trying to clean-up all the shoddy SEO you’ve done and going through the reconsideration process. Google is showing that if you put honest efforts into fixing the issues, they’re willing to remove some or all of the ranking penalties you’ve received.

Seeing Google hitting hard on the spam and quality issues is always a relief.  it’ll be interesting to see what the 2016 statistics and achievements will bring.
